Most people living, breathing and possessing any reasonable amount of cognitive functioning in today's world would agree that, like it or not, social media has become intrinsically fused into our daily lives. When the majority of people's media consumption occurs on social media, it's no surprise that consumers are attracted to and more likely to trust social brands.
But which brands are most effective with their social voice? How do we measure the power and influence of social media? Shouldn't marketers be able to verify it with empirical data rather than theory or pure logic? Shouldn't the hard facts give brands the information they need to be able to provide consumers with the content they crave? ![]() Truth be told, you’d be hard pressed to identify any industry in the world that has not been affected by Big Data in one way or another. Retailers analyze shoppers’ preferences to recommend additional products of interest and evaluate past purchases to predict future transactions. Marketers scrutinize social media engagement to gage consumer opinion and optimize effective strategies. The folks on Wall Street (i.e., traders, financial analysts and investment bankers) study Google Trends for search volume data to determine which stock market moves will be most profitable. Scientists at NASA map complex climate changes. The United States National Security Agency just finished its 1.5 billion dollar Utah Data Center, A.K.A. “the Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative Data Center” to gather, store and investigate data from intercepted satellite communications and underwater ocean cables in order to spot potential national security threats – or to spy on us?? Who really knows, its precise mission is classified. But that’s not the point.
![]() The past two weeks have had adventure written all over them. Last Monday, I moved into a motel with twelve other intrepid rebels with a cause from all over the country. We -- and the others who will join us in the forthcoming days -- have recently become the newest members of the TOMS family... We comprise the FIRST EVER TOMS Vagabond Crew. This is truly a historic occasion. For the next eight weeks, we will be booking a national campus tour. Come October, we’ll hit the road in teams of three, touring regionally in the NW, SW, TX/MW, SE and NE, visiting several high schools and college campuses every week. Along the way, we will be blogging, filming and documenting this experience of a lifetime for all TOMS fans to share with us. |
